Rural Action’s Zero Waste Program offers a 6 week course this year in Athens, Ohio beginning on March 9, 2024 to provide education on waste prevention, waste management, recycling, reusing, and composting topics. Along with this free educational course is a chance to volunteer with Zero Waste Program to earn the certification of Recycling Ambassador.

What to Expect

Presenters and tour guides are local experts in recycling, reducing, reusing, and composting. The classes are held once weekly, Saturday mornings 9-11, lasting 1.5-2 hours, following a lecture/Q&A format. Virtual option available upon request. See the program schedule below.

Recycling Ambassador Program Schedule:

  • March 9: Introduction to Ambassadors and Solid Waste District Lecture
  • March 16: Precycling
  • March 23: Recycling
  • March 30: Hard to Recycle Materials
  • April 6: Composting
  • April 13: Fixing and Reusing

  • Athens Hocking Recycling Center
  • Ohio University Compost Facility
  • Makerspace

How to earn the Recycling Ambassadors Certification:
Following the lectures and celebration of completion, ambassadors are asked to volunteer for 30 hours within the Rural Action Program and sites visited. Volunteer opportunities are clarified in the first session.

Session Advice:

  • You are encouraged to bring food and water to consume during sessions.
  • We are challenge by choice, participation in all activities is up to you.
  • Read your emails, we will be sending previews of lessons prior to the sessions, so come with questions!
