Rural Action programs partner for elementary school recycling competition
NELSONVILLE, Ohio — Rural Action’s Zero Waste and Environmental Education programs are partnering this spring for a recycling competition at Nelsonville-York Elementary School.
From May 15 through May 19, classes will compete to collect the most recyclables. The class who collects the most, judged by weight, will receive a laser-engraved plaque from Rural Action’s Community Makerspace.
“We’ll go out the Friday before, May 12, and the Environmental Education team will give a recycling relay presentation,” said Emerson Presar, a Zero Waste cohort AmeriCorps member. “It will give students ideas on how to recycle and what is recyclable.”
Rural Action will provide materials needed for the competition, including a recycling guide, floor scales, collection bins and bags, weight-tracking sheets, educational materials, and staff support.
The final weights will be calculated and the winner announced on Friday, May 19. Though there may be one winning classroom, all students will have accomplished something great by reducing waste in their community. All materials will be processed by Athens-Hocking Recycling Centers.
Rural Action is a regional community development organization with a 32-county footprint working with members and community leaders on a range of quality of life, environmental, and economic projects across rural Appalachian Ohio.
