Last week we learned about the passing of a good f

Last week we learned about the passing of a good friend. Bob Beyfuss was a tireless advocate of forest farming and that special plant he loved so much: American ginseng. Like the Johnny Appleseed of ginseng, Bob planted the root everywhere he went. He also planted the seed of stewardship in the people he met along the way.⁠

He was regularly the main event at Rural Action’s annual Southern Ohio Forest Farming Conference, and presented there as the keynote in 2021 and 2022. His work influenced what we do at Rural Action in many ways; from the specific advice we pass along to landowners on how to cultivate ginseng in a forest, to the very idea that forest plant husbandry can be done in ways that are both better for the plant and better for the planet, Bob was on the forefront of making forest farming accessible. On a personal level, he was a mentor to a number of Rural Action Forestry staff members, and his guidance (as well as his perennial sense of humor) will be sorely missed.⁠

We plan to continue Bob’s work, striving for an approach to forest farming that Bob liked to call “Conservation through Cultivation,” where making money and investing in sound forest management are complementary rather than competing. We miss him, but take solace in knowing that his impact lives on in so many ways and through so many in the forest farming community and beyond. ⁠

Michelle Ajamian and Eleanor Reagan of the Sustainable Agriculture team will be presenting alongside Amy Miller of Route 9 Cooperative at the OEFFA Conference this year to share their research about making and using chestnut flour.🌰⁠

Over the past year, the Appalachian Staple Foods Collaborative of Rural Action's Sustainable Agriculture program has partnered with four farmers from the Route 9 Cooperative and three local mills to develop value-added products including a fine chestnut flour made from Grade B chestnuts. This work is made possible through a grant from North Central SARE and will enable farmers and millers to scale up milling processes and increase the production of this sustainable, climate-resilient crop.🧑‍🌾👨‍🌾⁠
