Job Summary

The Media and Communications Director has the broad responsibility of ensuring that Rural Action has and maintains a strong brand and works to increase its brand’s reach and brand alignment with Rural Action’s strategic goals. The Media and Communications Director leads and oversees the development of a range of core media and communications functions while also helping program staff follow organizational protocols and remain consistent with Rural Action’s overall communications and branding strategies and plans.

Communications Planning and Strategy

  • Write and routinely update Rural Action’s annual communications plan;
  • Communicate the goals and strategies within the plan to staff on a routine basis;
  • Provide oversight and structure to all media and communications staff and subcontractors;
  • Coordinate routine check ins with the CEO, CPO, and program staff on all media and communications related activities and needs.

Development, Fundraisers and Events

  • Work with the CEO, CPO, administrative, and program staff to implement a robust development plan to help grow the organizations base of support;
  • Ensure that fundraisers, events, and member/donor communications are high quality productions and consistent with the values and expectations of our members;
  • Manage the design, communications, and logistics of all Rural Action keystone events: Annual Meeting, Adventure Auction, Giving Society Thank You, and Annual Fundraiser;
  • Provide oversight and structure to the media and communications of any online fundraising campaigns or program-specific social media campaigns Rural Action undertakes;
  • Work with program staff and Executive Assistant to set up fundraising campaigns using Bloomerang;
  • Ensure all RA events are documented as appropriate with photography and video;
  • Oversee or assist with the development of donor development and membership products;
  • Serve as the staff liaison on the Donor Development Committee;
  • Assist Rural Action members in setting up Point of Entry events as needed.

Print and Electronic Media

  • Oversee the development and production of quarterly print communications for Rural Action members;
  • Ensure that programs and staff have the printed or online materials needed to effectively communicate with various audiences, including information sheets, case statements, Business cards, greeting cards and letterhead, folders, etc.;
  • Oversee production and completion of Rural Action’s Annual Report;
  • Oversee the development and production of the Rural Rambler, Rural Action’s semi-monthly e-newsletter;
  • Oversee Rural Action’s social media accounts and ensure that they are being utilized fully and work with staff on implementation, keeping accounts updated and training staff on their applications;
  • Work with program staff to produce high quality quarterly program e-newsletters;
  • Work with Website contractor and staff to ensure a robust, updated, and visually pleasing website;
  • Work with staff to setup up events, mailing lists, newsletters and member announcements in Constant Contact and/or Bloomerang.

Marketing and Analytics

  • Work with staff to develop marketing plans for events, fundraisers, and other initiatives as required;
  • Work with staff to track and aggregate all media and communications efforts including press releases, PSAs, and other marketing activities;
  • Collect media and communications metrics to show progress or effectiveness of campaigns. Provide quarterly updates to staff;
  • Work with CEO and CPO to strategize new markets within the region for growth.

Supervisory Duties

  • Supervise one full-time staff member;
  • Supervise one full-time AmeriCorps VISTA member;
  • Assist in the onboarding of new staff, national service members, interns and volunteers as required;
  • Train interns, contractors and staff on Rural Action media and communications tools/products and marketing plans/tools as required to ensure brand consistency;
  • Provide coaching and support to all staff, interns, national service members, and volunteers as required.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Ensure maintenance of and access to all images and video for Rural Action;
  • Serve as the staff liaison on the Donor Development Committee;
  • Manage and maintain all Rural Action media equipment;
  • Maintain all passwords related to media, communications;
  • Serve as a Google Workspace Administrator for the organization;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Leadership skills to organize large teams toward shared goals;
  • Strong understanding of media, marketing, and communications tools and strategies including social media, print, online, and video or other multimedia;
  • Visual storytelling;
  • Strong project and people management skills;
  • Ability to provide creative direction on projects;
  • Ability to work in an environment with quickly shifting priorities;
  • Knowledge of how member-based nonprofits operate;
  • Experience working with and developing communications to members and donors;
  • Experience developing budgets and contracts;
  • Understanding of the formal and informal marketing and media systems in the region;
  • Ability to use project management software and CRM cloud databases;
  • Ability to work with staff and volunteers with varying skill levels with regard to the development of media and communications products;
  • Ability to listen and be responsive to staff and member needs around creative projects and products.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Visual Art, or similar and 5+ years in a communications role;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Supervisory experience;
  • Ability to work at a computer for long periods;
  • Experience working with the media;
  • Experience planning events and fundraisers;
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as required;
  • Ability to setup banners and displays at Rural Action events.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite;
  • Experience editing websites;
  • Experience with Bloomerang CRM;
  • Experience using Constant Contact.
