Our first forest farming event of the year will feature ramps (Allium tricoccum), the iconic spring time herb of Appalachia.
As a close relative of garlic and onions, ramps are pungently flavorful and have long been sought after as an edible spring delicacy. Unfortunately, many of the ramps currently harvested for market are collected from wild populations, and has resulted in notable population losses across much of the eastern U.S. and Canada.
The good news is that ramps are one of the easiest forest herbs to cultivate and manage sustainably! This free workshop will help participants gain a fundamental understanding of how to cultivate, manage, and market ramps using basic forest farming practices, and will also include a demonstration session where we will prepare a tasty ramp pesto and discuss value-added ramp products.
