What is so tough that it can survive on bark, rocks, dirt, and even outer space? A little organism called lichen. You might have seen it before: lichen is that flat, green or blue, flakey stuff on tree bark or rocks. Sometimes people think it’s moss, but it’s not. On this week’s virtual field trip, we’ll find out just what lichen is and what it does!
And don’t forget to pick up your virtual field trip take-home kit! Rural Action has partnered with the Athens County Public Libraries to create activity kits related to two virtual field trips a month. Each bag will include reading materials and supplies for activities. Get a bag from any of the seven Athens County Library branches next week to take the next virtual field trip on winter foraging home with you.
(BTW: You only need to register once for all the winter 2021 field trips. So if you’ve attended a field trip since September, the same link will work through March.)
