Join us for a non-competitive ride through the beautiful back roads in Athens County. We will tour 17.5 miles of historic and natural sites with a local historian, Ingrid Buckley. You will learn about the region’s rich history from a local perspective. Ingrid grew up in the hills of Appalachia and is a graduate from the College of Wooster, where she studied history.
Local refreshments will be provided at points of interest along the way, and opportunities to patronize local eateries and shops will be available. Stops at locations like Lock #19 of the Hocking Canal System will take you back in time as Ingrid describes what life was like when the canal was active and how it shaped our region.
Participants should anticipate 1,269 feet elevation gain with at 16.9% max grade and some gravel roads. This is a non-supported tour, meaning participants should come prepared with personal bike repair kits and water. Helmets are required. The ride begins at Nelsonville Public Library.
