Summer Watershed Daycamps

Each year our summer camps provide an exceedingly enriching experience to the youth of Athens and Perry County. Unfortunately, many deserving kids miss out on this opportunity because their families are unable to afford the cost of a day camp.

In 2012, we were able to offer the Monday Creek Watershed Camp for free to all 25 campers! This was possible because of the generous donations of area friends and partners. If you are interested in making a difference in your community, please contact us to donate time, money or services to our summer camps.

You will make a tremendous impact by making this experience available to a child who otherwise could not afford it. We hope to hear from you!

Rural Action runs two week-long day camps each summer in partnership with Sunday Creek Watershed Group and Monday Creek Restoration Project for children in these watersheds.

Each camp is a week of fun-filled adventure for up to twenty-five campers, who explore streams, engage in service projects, learn about the environment through games and activities, visit with area professionals, and eat freshly prepared, quality local food.

The true cost of sending a child to one of our watershed camps is around $275, but with donations and sponsorships we are able to offer the camps and a much lower rate to serve the community of SE Ohio.

Highlights of the camps include:

      • Live snakes, animals skulls, animal tracks, and a demonstration on the life of bears, thanks to visits from local nature and conservation professionals
      • Fresh, local food for daily lunches. Lunches include Snowville Creamery milk, Frog Ranch salsa, and homemade meals
      • Fish shocking with Ohio Department of Natural Resources specialist Kelly Capuzzi
      • Stream clean-ups in New Straitsville and Glouster
      • Swimming at Burr Oak Lake
      • Field trip to Wildcat Hollow, a pristine stream in Sunday Creek’s headwaters
      • Each Monday Creek camper took home his or her own new fishing pole, water bottle, and a reusable shopping bag to keep all of their fun collections and creations
