Plant Rescue:
Saving our
natural heritage
Treasures
of the forest
The
sharp ridges, steep ravines, and soaring hills of Southeastern Ohio
are home to some of the richest forests in North America. Wayne National
Forest, Ohio's only national forest, supports a diverse array of species,
including endangered plants and animals and valuable medicinal herbs
such as ginseng and goldenseal. The heritage of these forests is an
American treasure.

What
is a Plant Rescue?
The
Native Plant Rescue is your chance to protect a precious piece of
our forest heritage. Participants will dig up native forest plants
from the future site of the State Highway 33 by-pass through Wayne
National Forest. The plants will be placed in holding and seed production
beds for future restoration projects as well as native plant beds
for public enjoyment and education.

We
will meet at Wayne
National Forest Headquarters in the parking lot. Bring water and sunscreen,
and dress for the woods. Lunch will be provided.
Anyone
may participate: each rescue outing includes training on plant
identification and replanting.
These
events provide an opportunity to become skilled at differentiating between
native and non-native plants and to take part in
saving some of the genetic heritage of our forest herbs.
