L&S Drive Thru and Rural Action Announce Country Fresh Stop Location in McArthur

On Friday, June 19 L&S Drive Thru in McArthur will become Vinton County’s first “Country Fresh Stops” location. Beginning this Friday, L&S Drive Thru will offer fresh produce in Vinton County, which has had no grocery stores offering fresh produce since August 2013. The L&S Drive Thru (formerly Reedy’s) is located at 33689 Ohio 93, McArthur, OH 45651.

Country Fresh Stops developed by Rural Action and partners in 2011, takes fresh, local produce from the Chesterhill Produce Auction in Morgan County, Ohio and distributes it to storefronts that exist in food deserts—areas where a substantial number of residents live in low-income households and do not have access to grocery stores or healthy, affordable food—or places that have self-identified as having very low access to produce.

This year, the L&S Drive Thru in McArthur will become the fifth Country Fresh Stop Location in southeast Ohio. They have committed to buying seasonal local produce to make available to the community. Other country Fresh Stops locations include the Cee-Dee Handy Mart in Chauncey, Oh; the R&R Gulf in Roseville, OH; West Virginia University at Parkersburg; and Camden Clark Medical Center in Parkersburg WV.

“A group of stakeholders led by Sandy Shirey of AmeriCorps Senior Corps, and Teri Fetherolf of the Vinton County Department of Development has been working for affordable, accessible fresh produce for the past year. Teri Fetherolf referred Linda Murphy, one of the new owners of L&S Drive Thru to our project,” said Tom Redfern, Director of Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry at Rural Action. “Country Fresh stops take food from local farmers and delivers it to local people through local businesses.”

The new Country Fresh Stops in McArthur is made possible with support from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations.
