    Appalachia Ohio Zero Waste Initiative partners, the OHIO Voinovich School and Rural Action are hosting a conversation about construction and demolition debris (C&DD) recycling in the Athens-Hocking region on Thursday, March 23 from 1:00-2:30pm at the Nelsonville Public Library.   • Little Fish Kid's Day-Kite Making

    Little Fish and Rural Action are excited for the first KIDS DAY of 2017. Sunday March 26th from 2-6pm. It will be a fun day for all ages. The Cajun Clucker will be serving food on the patio if you get hungry.

  • Mushrooms in Mud Run: Community Meeting and Presentation

    Join Rural Action and The Mud Run Streamkeepers on May 2nd at 6pm at the Tuscarawas VFW as we welcome Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Specialist Chad Kinney for a special presentation on mushrooms.

    You probably know that mushrooms are a popular pizza topper. You probably also know that mushrooms grow in the wild. You may even be someone who already enjoys hunting for mushroom locally. Whether or not you enjoy eating them, mushrooms are a fascinating piece of our local natural history and the focal point of our May Mud Run Streamkeepers meeting.

    In this entertaining and informing presentation, Chad a will stuff your mushroom mind with more information than you ever knew existed about these wonderful fungi! Topics this talk will cover include: myths about mushrooms, tips and tricks to help Identify many types of mushrooms, common wild edible mushrooms found in Ohio, morels vs. false morels, cultivation of mushrooms, and many more interesting facts and stories relating to mushrooms.

    In addition to the presentation, Chad will be bringing his collection of macroinvertebrates (tiny water bugs) and related such critters. These jarred bugs will help explain the restoration work that’s happening in our own backyards, as Chad and the Mud Run Watershed crew work to clean up our stream.

    Chad’s presentation will be followed by a brief meeting of the Mud Run Streamkeepers to discuss upcoming events and other projects in the area. The public is invited and encouraged to attend! If you have any questions feel free to call the office at (330) 859-1050.

  • Birds in the Hills Festival

    Description:

    Join Rural Action, The Athens Area Birders, and Camp Oty’Okwa for our family-friendly Birds in the Hills Festival May 5-7 at United Plant Savers in Meigs County. This festival will feature a keynote from author Katie Fallon on Friday evening, a beer tasting and live music Saturday night, field trips led by local experts, and activities for families and children. We welcome anyone with even a remote interest in birds or being outside, especially those who have never picked up a pair of binoculars. Kiser's BBQ will cater and camping is available.

    Birds in the Hills Festival will feature field trips to Lake Hope State Park, Lake Snowden, and Vinton Experimental Forest. We will also have naturalist-led hikes through United Plant Savers' botanical sanctuary to see forest herbs and birds like blue-winged warblers, baltimore orioles, scarlet tanagers, and many more of our striking neotropical migrants. Participants can expect to see and hear up to 20 species of warblers, as well as yellow-billed cuckoos and a plethora of other migratory songbirds. Festival attendees will also have the opportunity to build bird feeders, bird houses, and to take home bird-friendly plants to improve habitat at your home for birds.
