  • Whole Farm Planning Workshop

    Description:

    Woodland Ridge Farm & Learning Center is working with Rural Action to hold a Whole Farm Planning workshop on Sept. 28. The workshop will show participants how Whole Farm Planning can tie together planning for traditionally separate areas while also encouraging new and existing agribusiness ventures to create new sources of income.

    Topics at the workshop will include sustainable energy, pork production, ginseng, and Airbnb. The hosts for these discussions will be, respectively: Paul Harper, the owner and operator of Woodland Ridge Farm; Ben Griffith, who has managed Woodland's pork industry for three years; Tanner Filyaw, who holds a master's degree in sustainable forestry and once lectured at Yale; and an Airbnb expert.

    The workshop costs $25 and will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants also have the option of paying extra to stay at Woodland’s Airbnb that weekend. For more details, contact workshop coordinator Levi Brown at levi@ruralaction.org or 740-541-1906.

  • GEO Solar Tour Stop -- Woodland Ridge Learning Center

    Description:

    This tour stop is combined with a weekend-long Whole Farm Planning workshop. Solar tourists are welcome to stop by between 2 and 4 p.m. to learn about the off-grid battery backup solar PV system Paul Harper has installed at his bed and breakfast. No cost to stop by to see the solar, but if you want to participate in the all-day workshop, registration and payment is required.

    Fungi are often considered to be mysterious and fearsome creatures. What are they really, and how do they play critical roles in natural ecosystems? What are some of the cutting-edge applications of fungi to produce new technologies? Join fungi expert Martha Bishop to learn basic lab exercises that you can do in your classroom, and go into the field to learn about the major groups of fungi and how to collect and identify mushrooms. Your local woods and fields will never look the same once you can see the place of fungi and their allies.     Rural Action's Sustainable Energy Solutions will facilitate an "Exploring Energy" Workshop. Participants will learn about energy efficiency and renewable energy through hands-on activities and interactive displays. Free weatherization items -- including LED bulbs, weatherization stripping, power strips and solar lanterns -- will be distributed to participants.

    Solar Cook-out will feature grilled foods prepared with GoSun Solar Stoves -- food and beverages provided by Rural Action.

    Electric Vehicle Showcase will feature a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station and several EVs on display. Q&A with EV owners and enthusiasts.

    This event is free and open to the public but registration is required for the 10 a.m. Exploring Energy Workshop.

    This class will discuss the ways that population, resources, and the environment are interrelated. Amazing, hands-on materials from Population Connection, an international organization and curriculum, will equip you with age appropriate activities related to your subject area. Population Connection, founded in 1968, is the largest grassroots population organization. Since 1975, the program has developed curricula to complement students' science and social science instruction about human population trends and their impacts on natural resources, environmental quality, and human well-being.

    This is a great learning opportunity for adults, environmental educators, naturalists, and teachers. Each participate will receive access to the activities and resources.   • Adult Education Workshop: The Birds Around Us with John Watts

    Birds are virtually everywhere. Sometimes we notice them, other times they are just "specs of motion" that pass by us in our day-to-day lives. Birds are great indicators of habitat type and ecological health and it is easy to learn 100 species of Ohio's birds. In this workshop we will focus on the keys to bird identification, habitats to find birds, backyard birds, and some of the species one is likely to encounter with a little effort. After some in-class discussion, we will take a field trip to local bird hotspots to view various species of birds. Join expert and co-author of Birds of Hocking County, Ohio, John Watts, for this hands-on workshop. The cost is $35 and lunch is included. Graduate credit is available.
