Erin Sykes first got into environmental sustainability through a passion for recycling. Her roommates in college tell stories of her digging in the student center trash to “rescue” plastic bottles. After working in Ohio University’s Office of Sustainability for four years and earning a Graduate Certificate in Sustainability, Erin sees our sustainability issues as much bigger than recycling. It’s a whole systems approach to thinking! This whole system thinking is right in line with the goals of the Appalachia Ohio Zero Waste Initiative. The initiative looks at the entire cycle of waste not just what to do with our stuff when we’re done with it. Erin was thrilled to join staff in October 2011.
