The Plains, Ohio — While you’re participating in the 23rd annual Great Backyard Bird Count this weekend, don’t forget to mark your calendar for Birds in the Hills, a three-day festival in May that celebrates Southeast Ohio’s feathered friends.

Birds in the Hills, scheduled for May 8-10, will give people of all ages a chance to dip their toes into birding and natural history, with events for families, adults, and specifically the kids. The Eclipse Company Store in The Plains will serve as our hub of outreach, music, and speakers, and field trips, hikes, and events will take place all around the Athens region.

A detailed event schedule will be released soon. To ensure you’re in the know, subscribe to our email update list , or you can keep an eye on the events section of Rural Action’s Facebook page.

The Athens Area Birders, one of our co-sponsors of Birds in the Hills, is planning a morning walk on the Dairy Barn Ora Anderson Trail Saturday (Feb. 15) at 9 a.m. as part of the Great American Bird Count. Birders can spend as little as 15 minutes this weekend and still make a difference. Check out birdcount.org for details on how you can get involved..

Other sponsors for Birds in the Hills include Camp Oty’Okwa, Hocking College, the Athens Conservancy, and the Buckeye Trail Association.
