During Monday’s July 4th Chesterhill Produce Auction, Rural Action held a corn roast in honor of the holiday. The corn was generously donated from the Marietta and Waterford areas.
According to Tom Redfern, Rural Action’s Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator, the July 4th event pooled a fairly big turnout of small buyers. Whole families turned out for the community event and to enjoy the sweet corn.
During the July 4th Chester Hill Produce Auction, attendees celebrated the holiday with a community potluck. Volunteer Kathy Layman said she started going to the auctions three years ago because she was new to the area and the auctions were a great way to meet new people.
Volunteer Thomas Thoma roasted sweet corn for attendees. The corn was roasted on a campfire just outside the auction. Thoma has been attending the Chesterhill Produce Auction for the past four years. When asked why he enjoys coming to every auction, he responded, “I like to try to outbid everybody.”
Attendees enjoyed roasted corn as Auctioneer Paul Harper auctioned off an assortment of produce. Items auctioned of included vegetables, fruits and a variety of plants.
