![]() New Straitsville's community mural was introduced at the town's annual Moonshine Festival on Memorial Day weekend, 1999. Located on the side of the New Straitsville History Museum at 200 W Main Street (the former Ward's Confectionery Building), the mural portrays the town's four major industries: coal, oil, clay, and moonshine. The mural was rendered from historical photographs as well as images taken from local lore and oral histories. The muralist was local artist Sandra Russell, a Rural Action VISTA worker, assisted by community mural intern Kim Blosser and a dozen New Straitsville young people. Rural Action, New Straitsville Local History Center, and Sunday Creek Associates of southern Perry County were partners in the mural project. The Mural Corridor is a Rural Action project that links communities together through murals as a way to support the local economy through cultural toursim.
